Outbound Continuous Insulation Is Key to Energy Efficiency

Typical insulation in commercial and residential building over the past 60 years or so has been insulation placed in the wall between studs or in interior cavities. However, studies are now showing that the best insulation strategy is to place it outbound or outside the wall. It is the best insulation as it provides 100% coverage of the walls, eliminating thermal bridging that can occur through the wall studs. Traditional insulation cannot provide continuous insulation as it is between-the-stud insulation, effective only where it is present. In addition, EIFS can be used for energy efficient retrofits of existing building stock, with minimal disturbance to the building occupants. An EIFS retrofit provides continuous insulation to the existing building, vastly improving energy performance. With rising energy demands, the need for effective products cannot be understated. An airtight building enclosure that incorporates exterior continuous insulation in addition to cavity insulation is the best insulation strategy for energy efficiency. As such the choice of an exterior insulation and finish system can help provide the best insulation for energy efficient structures.

A Tuesday evening – 3/24/2009


Tuesday evening work sessions have taken place for a long time at the R&GVRRM. On Tuesday evening, March 24, 2009, we find the museum’s Huber-Warco grader working around switch #6 where the lead to the museum’s restoration building leaves the mainline. Sitting on siding #6 is ex-RG&E GE 110-tonner #8 which was recently moved over from storage on the museum’s new storage siding west of the LA&L. #8 was building air while the grading took place. #8 later headed north for a test run, and we see #8 returning from that test run. Tuesday evenings are always busy, and we are always welcoming new people to come and join us to help volunteer around the museum.

It’s a cold winter and there’s been a bad snow fall, which makes for trouble further along the line. Henry has a smooth run up until a point, unknowing that a signal has been forced down with the heavy snow and he’s being diverted into a siding due to frozen points! Through pure chance, the crew of the train parked in the siding have just left the brake van, which is torn to pieces when Henry crashes into it, along with a good load of cocoa being ruined! The Fat Controller seizes the opportunity of the crash to rebuild Henry, sending him to Crewe to be given a new shape and larger firebox, eliminating the need for special coal and making Henry the engine he always deserved to be.

It used to be that vinyl banners were only useful as short term replacements for more “professional” looking signs. But the advent of digital printing has meant that vinyl banners can be printed in full color. And they are very inexpensive compared to the alternatives. This means that vinyl banners have a wide range of uses. Here are some of the most popular.

1. Banner Signs – Outdoor Banners

Banner Signs are often used in the place of more rigid signage. Because they are outdoor banners, they are printed on very rugged tear-resistant vinyl, and then seamed around all four sides for added strength and wind resistance. Grommets are applied where necessary for easy hanging.

Banner signs can be tied down, or screwed down, and will last for years without tearing or fading. You can also mount your banner sign without grommets by asking for “pole pockets” instead. 4. Event Banners, Birthday Banners, Anniversary Banners

Event banners can be either Indoor or Outdoor Banners. The cost is virtually the same, since only the material is different. In the case of Birthday Banners that are used indoors, the vinyl material is often softer, and less tear-resistant. Even paper will work, although it is much less durable, and not significantly less expensive.

Many Event Banners are meant to be hung or mounted outside, like a Sign Banner. For instance many churches use event banners to announce programs like Vacation Bible School, or golf courses to promote a special tournament. These banners are usually printed on a more tear-resistant material, and should include seams and grommets where requested. If you need your banner to last for more than one event it is best to print it with durable outdoor inks to make it scratch, water, and UV resistant.

5. Streetscape or Boulevard Banners

Vinyl banners are perfect for adding atmosphere and identity to streetscapes. Special hardware allows you to hang your banners vertically from utility poles. Pole pockets top and bottom make it easy to put up and take down your banners. Streetscape banners are made more durable and weather-resistant by welding two banners together to make a two-sided banner. And of course solvent inks are essential for this application since streetscape banners are fully exposed to the elements.

Be sure your vinyl banners are printed with full color outdoor resistant printing using solvent inks. Because the printing process is a digital one, banner designs can include photographs, logos, and special artwork. You can normally use your own vinyl banner design, or your supplier can create a banner design for you for a small charge.
